NX

SER-CAT uses a program called NX for its remote access program. The client program is free and can be downloaded from http://www.nomachine.com . The NX client can be installed on a wide variety of operating systems and has been tested on windows, MAC, and linux platforms without any trouble.  Installation instructions can be found at : http://www.nomachine.com/documents/client/install .

Once you have downloaded and installed the NX client on your local machine(s), you can arrange for a test during any day there is no beam in the ring. You can look at the ring status on the APS website: http://www.aps.anl.gov/Facility/Schedule .  To arrange for a test, contact either John Chrzas (chrzas@anl.gov)or Zhongmin Jin (zmjin@anl.gov) .

When you start the NX software you will see this screen.

Press the Configure button to display the following screen.

You will need to contact the CAT staff for the Host address. You might also need to contact your local IT staff to make sure that any firewall that you are behind is configured to allow ssh traffic on port 22. Once the NX client is properly configured, you should be able to log into the appropriate beamline computer.

NOTE: Access to the beamline control computers is restricted to the user scheduled for that time. If you are not scheduled and have not made prior arrangements with the CAT staff, you will not be allowed to log onto the beamline computers!
