The SER-CAT Mail-In Crystallography Program is available to all SER-CAT members. Members can mail in (or leave behind) samples for data collection by CAT staff. A number of slots are scheduled each run to be part of the mail-in crystallography program. Beam time also becomes available due to cancellations as well as members finishing early.
The beam times scheduled for the program are labeled "mail-in crystallography" on the beam time schedule, and consists primarily of the 3 hours following a planned storage ring maintenance period. Each slot will be assigned to either 1 or 2 members; if a MAD experiment is planned, 1 slot will be assigned to 1 member, otherwise 2 members will be assigned.
Each member institution can store 1 cane of samples per share owned by that institution. A management system has been developed and implemented to keep track of samples as well as their documentation and paperwork.
A standby list will be used in cases when scheduled beam time is not available. The standby list will be used to fill in empty time in the scheduled beamtime, as well as the open beamtime that always appears during a run due to cancellations or groups finishing early.
The success of any mail-in program will be gauged by the participation of the staff. While a number of the experiments will be simple, single wavelength experiments that only require a staff member to mount and collect, other experiments will require the participation of the staff on a scientific level; such as all MAD data collection.
In the case where the staff member participates on a scientific level, the member should give due consideration to inviting the staff member to join as a co-author on that project.
