Sector 22 Experimental Hall
Neighbors
- At Sector 21 is LS-CAT; Sector 23 is GM/CA-CAT and Sector 24 is NE-CAT.
- Located between Sectors 22 and 23 is the APS Floor Coordinator's office and the machine shop; use of the latter requires additional training.
Beamlines
- SER-CAT has two beamlines:
- Sector 22-ID, the Insertion Device Beamline, has been operational since 2002.
- Sector 22-BM, the Bending Magnet Beamline, which should be commissioned mid 2005.
SER-CAT Beamline Equipment
- In addition to beamline hardware and software, each SER-CAT beamline is fully equipped with data collection hardware and software; computers for data collection, processing, and archiving; a crystal preparation work bench, printer, and telephones. Computer Resources
First Optics Enclosure
- The First Optics Enclosure, or A Station, contains some beamline optics.
Second Optics Enclosure
- The Second Optics Enclosure, or C Station, contains the beamline optics, including the monochromator, and on the BM beamline, also the focussing mirrors.
- Inside the Second Optics Enclosure on the ID beamline are the liquid nitrogen dewar and pump for cooling the ID beamline monochromator.
Experiment End Station
- The Experiment End Station, or D Station, contains the shutters, filters, slits, crystal goniostat, crystal cryo-cooling system, and a MAR 300 and base data collection system. Do not lean on the MAR base, as it can be easily moved out of alignment.
Notice Board
- The SER-CAT Notice Board is located on column 132. It is a black-framed glass case. It contains "Right to Know" Information.
- Prior to beginning the experiment, a copy of the approved ESAF form and necessary supporting documentation must be posted on this board.
Safety
- Beware of the traffic on the Experimental Floor. Use caution when entering and exiting the Experimental Hall.
- It is APS policy that food is not permitted in the Experimental Hall. Drinks, however, are permitted in the hall but not in the radiaton enclosures.

- Major announcements regarding changes in the APS ring status are made over the loud speaker, such as "loss of current beam", or "top-up has been aborted".
Workstations
- A SER-CAT staff member will provide user support for the duration of your visit and will address your questions and concerns. Do not call or page SER-CAT staff between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM (dark hours) unless there is an equipment problem that, if ignored, would result in either equipment damage or a safety compromise.
- You will be assigned to a work area for data processing that is for your group to use for the duration of your visit.
- There are dedicated computers for beamline control and detector work. The system is cleaned every three to four days.
- The workstations are equipped with linux machines for data processing utilizing HKL and writing to CDs, and also a firewire interface. There is a laser jet printer, and telephones for your use.
- Paper disposed in the blue bin is recycled.
